Wilhelm Herschbach + Anna Catharina Eussems In 1983 James V. Herschbach of Ellisgrove, Illinois sent a letter to the West German Society for Genealogy requesting information on Gerhard and Anna Herschbach. A letter in reply to this inquiry was received from Albrecht W. Bolz in Germany. I have a copy of this reply, which is in German, and an attached English translation. I do not know who did the translation, and am unsure of it's accuracy, so if anyone with a good knowledge of German sees any corrections that can be made, please contact me at steve@herschbach.com. I will give the full German text here, followed by the translation. This letter is the only information I have concerning my ancestry before Gerhard. While I am accepting it at face value, it must be considered questionable as there is no documentation whatsoever of the provided information. Also, while it does provide information on the parentage of Gerhard and Anna, there is no mention of siblings, leaving the question of whether Henry and Gerhard are brothers unanswered. It is even possible there are other siblings we have no knowledge of. For now, I am assuming Henry and Gerhard are brothers. The letter closes with an offer to research more information for a fee. This offer, as far as I am aware, was not followed up on. It does give me a lead, though somewhat old, to follow up on myself. I intend to try and make the same inquiry to the West German Society of Genealogy, both to verify this information, and to try and find out more about the early history of the family. Here is the parentage of Gerhard and Anna as described in this document: Wilhelm Herschbach + Anna Catharina Eussems
Simon Scheid + Elisabeth Schlosser *Note: Anna Yousoupha Scheidt (from her obituary) is given as Anna Josepha Scheid in this German document. This seems to me to be a more "Germanic" name than that given in her obituary and I believe it is her actual given name. "Yousoupha" is probably a phonetic misspelling. This is confirmed by Gerhard's will, which clearly leaves everything to his wife "Anna Josepha Herschbach". Since the newspaper misspelled Anna's middle name, it is reasonable to assume her last name was also misspelled, and I am therefore using "Anna Josepha Sheid" as Anna's maiden name in my updated family tree. It may be, however, that Scheidt is her true maiden name. More research is needed to settle this question. German Text: Albrecht V. Bolz Mr. James V.
